Melt Organic Butter Review & Giveaway

Congratulations to winners Jackie Villano and Leanne Cobbledick!

In my house growing up, it was all about the margarine. Sure, maybe you would use real butter when baking cookies, but for everyday use, for the buttering of bread and potatoes and sundry vegetables, it was all about the margarine. Some Country Crock, some Blue Bonnet, some Gold N Soft.

I don't know about you, but growing up on margarine makes just regular butter seem kind of bland when just spread on things. Not to mention how difficult spreading regular ole butter is. But there's been this whole movement against margarine. You know, it's bad for you. And truly, it is. Partially hydrogenated oils and whatnot are obviously not something good for the body. There are many alternatives out there nowadays to get your margarine fix without the actual margarine.

Melt Organic contacted me about trying out their new butter spread, and I thought why the heck not? Instead of partially hydrogenated whatever, they use a combination of virgin coconut oil, palm fruit oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, and flaxseed oil to give you the nice buttery flavor your young self became accustomed to, without all the nastiness.

So what's my opinion on the product, you may wonder? I actually really like it. It looks more like regular butter than your average margarine, melts very much like regular butter as well, and is easily spreadable. All important factors. And what about the taste? It's a bit less "buttery" than your average margarine spread, or I guess I should say it's a bit less "margarine-y" as it tastes more like regular butter. I was concerned there may be a slight coconut flavor since I am not a huge coconut fan, but while there is a twinge of sweetness, it's not necessarily coconut flavored.

Since I had two coupons, I decided to also give the honey version a try. Honestly I was not as big of a fan of this one. It's kind of a honey/cinnamon blend, so if you really like to have cinnamon sugar toast, you'll probably enjoy it more than me, but I found myself hardly ever wanting to use it. That's really probably just a personal preference thing and nothing against the product itself, I just found it maybe to be a touch too sweet.

There has been some brouhaha about the fact that Melt touts itself as being an alternative to butter when it actually contains organic ghee (clarified butter) in the ingredients, which makes it a milk product after all. So, if you're looking for something that does not have butter/milk in it, this won't be for you. But if you're looking for something as a healthier alternative, then perhaps Melt is the way to go. I will note that it is gluten free, for those that are not gluten friendly.

Now the fun part - YOU can get in on the action and try out Melt too!

Win a prize pack of one cutting board, one spreader, and coupons for free Melt Organic spread.

The giveaway will end on February 28th at which time Melt will randomly select one winner per participating blog. I will then notify the winner here so they can claim their prize.

Disclaimer: I received vouchers for Melt Organic buttery spread, so it was free. I also received a complimentary cutting mat and spreader as shown in the above photo. I was not otherwise compensated for this review, and all opinions are my own.

Giveaway! Seasons of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, Weeds and Boss on BluRay

And the winner is... Megon Burkit! Congratulations! Hope you enjoy the BluRays! (Winner was chosen at random)

Christmas may be over, but that doesn't mean you can't still get a gift! I've got a prize pack of some random seasons of TV shows to give away today. Are you ready? Are you into it?

This is called a bit of Jen cleaning out her collection of shows she doesn't watch. I used to watch Mad Men, but I don't anymore. I know, sacrilege and blah blah. But my loss is your gain, people! I also never watched any of Nurse Jackie, Weeds or Boss. These are a bit random in the seasons department, I admit, but maybe some of you are missing some of these, or know just the right person for each one of them.

Or maybe you're a hoarder. No judging here.

The seasons up for grabs here are: Mad Men season 6, Nurse Jackie season 4, Weeds season 8, and Boss season 2. These are all on Blu-Ray (fancy!). That makes this pack worth about $100. I thought about splitting them up and doing separate giveaways, but you know what? I have even MORE stuff I can give away coming up, so let's be generous! None of these are opened or have ever been viewed, so you're not getting used sets or anything. BRAND. NEW.

HOW TO ENTER:

You can enter up to three times in the following ways:

1. Leave a comment here

2. Like my Facebook page and leave a comment there

3. Follow me on Twitter and RT the tweet about the giveaway

Entries will be accepted until Sunday January 19th at 11:59pm, and a winner will be chosen at random.

So, get entering! Spread the word! I'd love to have more of these giveaways, and it's more encouraging for me when lots of people enter.

Review of Grimm - Aunt Marie's Book of Lore + a Giveaway!

Review of Grimm - Aunt Marie's Book of Lore by freshfromthe.comOkay Grimmsters, I've got something for you today that should get you pumped. Titan Books were nice enough to send me a review copy of their new book - Grimm - Aunt Marie's Book of Lore. A must-have for any true Grimm fan!

Yeah, you know that book that Nick looks through occasionally when he has some Wesen he's never encountered before? This is basically a version of that, but in handy glossy-page form. The book explores some of the monsters, weapons and potions featured on the show, with detailed pictures and descriptions. I've got some sample pages below to give you an idea of a couple of them.

Fitting the show's background, many of the entries are in other languages, with some translations "sticky-noted" on in English. Throughout the pages there are little bits of viscera and bugs to make it look like the book has been through the ringer. Most of the descriptions are accompanied by hand-drawn pictures as well as photos from the show itself. There are also some pages devoted specifically to weapons and potions for those who are in to that. I think my favorite thing was one page that had a hole "burned" in it, and you could see through to the next page, and it actually had stuff in the hole from the next page to make it seem like an actual hole. Cool detail.

Some of your favorite Wesen get detailed, including the Blutbad and the Hexenbiest. Overall, it's a fun book that isn't your typical companion piece, but rather feels more like something coming direct from the world itself, which is always cool. You'll probably enjoy it if you're a fan of the show, and especially if you like the lore behind it all.

The only thing I would say is that you kind of wish it was upholstered in actual leather, and that it's sometimes hard to read the pages because they are meant to look sort of realistic. I suppose maybe that would be a plus for some people, but I found myself kind of glossing over some things that looked too cramped and hard to read.

Nonetheless, a fun book that will surely delight any Grimmster out there. I must admit, I have a special place in my viewing heart for this show, because it's filmed in Portland, my hometown. Most episodes I can see some place and go, I know that! I know where that is! And I get all excited and nostalgic and slightly homesick and wish I could somehow work on it up there.

HOW TO ENTER TO WIN!

There are three ways for you to enter, which means three separate entries to win. So, the more of these things you do, the more likely your chance to win!

1. Leave a comment here on this post. Maybe say who your favorite character on the show is for fun. Or what your favorite episode has been. Whatever you want!

2. Like my page on Facebook and leave a comment on there that you're entering to win the book.

The giveaway will close on Friday, November 29, at 11:59pm PST.

Winner! Supernatural: Rite of Passage Giveaway

And the lucky winner of the new Supernatural tie-in novel Rite of Passage is...

Grean, who had this to say about what they love about Supernatural:
"First it was two hot men shooting demons in the head, then it was two hot brothers and the stories about family and sacrifice. Then it was all about the whole angsty story wrapped up in two hot men. I don't know how much further it will morph or what form it will take but I love the ride, the two hot men are always front and center."

And the winner is...

And the winner of the Party Down Season 1 DVD giveaway is...

Lilly, who said... "Tough question. There are so many good shows out there right now. I'd have to say Community though. It's the only show I watch at least twice in order to catch all the things I may have missed because I was laughing so hard the first time."
Thanks to everyone who entered! Lilly, go ahead and email me at freshfromjen@gmail.com to claim your loot.

In case you're wondering how I chose a random winner, I used the very sophisticated method of literally choosing a name out of a hat. I know there's some way to use random.org to do it, but it required too much figuring out.
